The beadbutt reigns supreme November 12, 2007

Since I’ve quit working a real J.O.B. (which was only for 6 months, actually), I’ve grown proportionally. Ugh! Time to get off the beadbutt and do some walking, so I went out today in the unseasonably warm weather (it’s 62 right now, and the norm is about 45 or so) and walked to the boat launch and back. I decided to extend the walk a little (ended up being around 3 miles, woo hoo!), because (this is going to sound weird!) I was really enjoying the music on my Palm, and the rain. Yep, walking in the rain, thunder, Tyler Bates’ 300 soundtrack and Evans Blue on my little earbuds (I hate earbuds. Have to get real headphones for the walking!). Loved every minute of it 🙂

Quite unexpectedly, I torched this morning. A friend posted a glass artist’s site, and I went to take a look- there was an hourglass, and all of a sudden I jumped up and fired up the kiln and concentrator. An idea hit me! Trial #1- broke the bead release. Same for trials 2-4. FINALLY I got one to round up, and realized the glass was MUCH too thick to be an elegant hourglass. Next… well, it was better 🙂 I decorated it and put it in the kiln… figured while I was there, I should make something else. When I have nothing else in my head, what do I make? Calaveras. So, 11 skully beads later, I was hungry and ready to go for a walk. Put new tunes on my Palm (had to format the card, so putting 118MB of music on at once… I ate while it was transferring ;), got dressed for stormy weather and hit the road.

Beautiful outside, honestly. I love the rain, and rain in autumn is stunning. I hardly used my umbrella 🙂

You did what? November 8, 2007

Early in the morning, right after I wake up… coffee in hand, blinking to clear the cross eyed morning stare, I think… A 3D snowman inside of clear. I’ve got to make that.  So, trusty Sharpie in hand, I write it on the tile of my torch bench (because of the excellent ventilation in this room, this is where hubby and I smoke- yes, I know I was supposed to be quitting.)- 3D snowman in clear, christmas tree, Santa doll. These are the ideas I have this morning. I should have more coffee before I Sharpie any inspirations down!

Later, I sit at my torch making cute little snowmen, one after the other, then slathering them with clear glass.  3 times… 4 times… The fifth! A winner!  On to the tree, and that turned out half decent the very first time. I went on to make a 3D ornament encased in clear, and then… a present.  No matter what you do, if you encase a cube of glass in a round of glass, the cube will not look like a cube no mo’. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Pictures later this week when I have more to photograph at one time! 🙂

Timing November 4, 2007

I’ll get into the timing issue later, but now it’s a little after 8 am (thanks to daylight savings starting today) and I’m sitting around waiting to list my auctions.  8 am is definitely not a good time to have them end!

About the dolls… These dolls are a LOT of work, not only making the beads (which takes about 3-4 hours, depending on how many canes I have to pull for them), but making the accessories and wiring them together (which takes another 3-4 hours, longer if I have to sculpt something from polymer clay and then paint it), then you have to count taking photos and editing said photos.  If I were to price them per the lampworking standard, they’d start at auction somewhere around $300, but that’s just not feasible.  Sheesh!  Pricing is a necessary evil.

This weekend we had a great time playing in the leaves, then burning the leaves and some fallen branches from our little forest to roast tiny hot dogs 🙂  Let’s see if I can find some little photos to show off.

Ok, I found lots of photos to show off 😀

We found that Boo really loved the leaves, he’s a fluffy white mole.

All in all, a good night 🙂  We had fun!

Didn’t want to miss a day!

I’ll be back later when work is done, but to keep up with my pledge, here’s a quick teaser of what I’m working on 😀

Desdemona the doll…. more on the dolls later! 😀

She’s a bad girl. November 2, 2007

I’ll have photos of her tomorrow, but today, I’m done with her!  I spent the day wiring up two new glass dolls.  Why does it take so long to wire up 8-12 beads into a complete form? I have no idea, but boy howdy, these dolls are time consuming!  Today I made a mermaid with the biggest beehive you’ve ever seen and a bad, bad, evil devil girl.  Cloven hooves and all 😉  I even made a tiny chain flogger/cat-o’-nine-tails for her!  The mermaid carries a golden polymer clay and glass bead trident (very girly, it’s curly!), and I’m thinking of making a pearl and aquamarine necklace for her before photos go up.

So, this was my day, and boring as it was, I pledged to post a blog every day this month for NaBloPoMo!  Tomorrow, photos of the dollies… IF I can get some free time from the kids! 😀

Someday I want to… November 1, 2007

Filed under: Lampworking — pyropagan @ 12:28 pm

Wow, two posts in one day! I missed this last Thursday, due to being a whiner.  So, Flaming Hot has presented this topic- Someday I want to… what? What is it that I really want to do in regards to my lampwork?

Electroforming. I want to create these gorgeous organic nuggets of joy.  I want to embellish my beads with swaths and granules of copper.  I have so many ideas, but can’t do them yet because the kit is minorly costly (read: more than my torch, less than my kiln.)

Faceting.  I want a lapidary grinder so I can make those beautiful windows in beads, and shape them like fine art.  I love lapped beads.

Boro.  I have boro glass.  I have a torch that will melt boro.  I have no desire to reprogram my digital controller to anneal boro 🙂 I, alas, am lazy.  I also have no willpower, and know that if I start working boro, it will own me. I’m not done with soft glass yet! 🙂

Ok, really now, I’m off to make something! 🙂 Soon. Here I go. *slouching away*
