Without the kids, on a Saturday! Yippeeee!  Hubby today told me to get ready to go pre-noon, because we were going out.  Out? On a Saturday?  Wow!  So, we got in the car and headed to Huntington to Homier… to pick up bandages.  Best bandages in the world, I tell you.  100 fabric bandages for a BUCK!  Anyway, once we were there and picking around- it’s mostly a tool store, but they import a lot of trivial trinkets, geegaws and gimcrack- I found the most perfect storage table.  3 wire baskets, 3 shelves with a glass door- and all my yarn fits in it 🙂  For 20 bucks, I couldn’t pass it by, so it came home with us 😀

Hubby says it looks like a store 😉  I have my knitting needles in a vase and the double pointed needles in a glass curio jar, and I have to figure out what to do with my circulars.  They’re a mess!  So, after buying THE table, we stopped at the pet store and picked up bunny vitamins, then off to dinner at Market Street Grill in Wabash.  Crawfish bisque, SO good, Caesar salad, bread, and I was so full by the time the actual dinner came that I ate one shrimp and put the rest in a to-go box 🙂  Sooooo yummy!

Nothing on the glass front today, I’ll be back to work on that in a day or two.  In the meantime, here’s a GORGEOUS Etsy listing from Fr3d. She iz teh r0ckerz!! You can click the pic to go to the listing 🙂

Back in a couple of days- I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

Approaching laziness! February 8, 2008

Ahh, here comes the weekend!  I plan on doing nothing but knitting and watching movies.  Except I really wanted to make a set of button shaped beads based on this focal I just listed…

Yummy, huh?  I love the glowing silver inside it!  Only a canes to pull, some silver to cut, and I’ll be all set (as long as my clear comes in today… hmph).

A good glass friend of mine is contemplating selling her torch to pay some bills- this winter has been rough on a lot of artists, and the economy isn’t looking up.  We’re all hoping that with tax refunds coming in, people will buy jewelry, in turn, jewelry designers will need beads.  Cross your fingers for us.  Anyway, our glass forum is begging her not to sell it, and she said it’s amazing how upset we all are about selling a torch and it shows how dedicated we are to our art.  LOL… She’s right, but I got to thinking, what would I do if I had to sell mine for the cash?  Unlike her, I don’t have a day to day job, so if I really needed the cash, I’d spend all day torching for a week and put some buy it now auctions up, crossing my fingers… I could usually come up with at least a couple of auctions that would sell. But if that didn’t work?  I know I’d be crying as I put it up for sale!  Vicious cycle- sell the torch to get money, then how do I make more money to buy a new torch? Yep. Conundrum.

So, auctions are up! Yay! Prepare for laziness 😀

Artists will try using ANYTHING in their art.  Now, glass artists might not use plastic or anything of that sort, but if you put something metal in front of us, I bet you that we can figure out how to use it with our glass 🙂  I have tools that you wouldn’t ever associate with lampworking in my glass room, and even if you saw them, you might have to ask what the heck I use them for!  I have an aluminum block that was once a wire bending jig for wired jewelry- it now holds my dipped mandrels.  I have a tiling adhesive type trowel attached to a ‘third hand’ base for leveling out beads- the serrated edge holds a mandrel just right for me to rotate it and round out hot glass.  Butter knives, tongue piercing hemostats, sugar tongs, stainless steel chopsticks, a magnetic knife strip, auto body dollies, cute little brass molding hardware… I love going to Home Depot and Lowe’s as much as hubby does.  Never know what you’ll run across and think.. You know, I could do THIS with THAT!

So, here’s what I photographed today- the first two photos are prize beads for a Mardi Gras thread I posted in The Glass Haven.  The third is up on eBay (and I put two new focals in the Etsy store 🙂 ).    That’s enough photo hogging for the day! 🙂

So there we are for the day!  I did no torching today, instead opting to play with my new gorgeous yarn and work on mitered squares (my first), and catching up on LOLcat posts.  🙂  Tomorrow’s looking like there will be no school, so I may hide and torch for a couple of hours while the kids watch a movie 😀  Bad mommy…

The TGH Etsy team! February 6, 2008

I’m a fairly active member of one glass forum, The Glass Haven, posting there pretty regularly (well, a lot more regularly than I blog :D).  Several of the members there have an Etsy shop, and the forum owner thought it would be a great idea to set up a TGH Etsy Street Team. Yay! Here’s my button for the team:

I’m going to have to revise my item descriptions to include something about the team so that we can have buyers network better through our items.  We have some awesome artists on this team! 🙂  And I’ll have to find a way to get a button on my sidebar for this, too 🙂

School was out today, because of fog and flooding, and it’s still raining/sleeting.  I don’t know what’s up tomorrow, but I did manage to get some beads made today amidst the hysteria!  I’ll be posting a little about them tomorrow.  For now, some eye candy from one of my girls at The Glass Haven, SleekBeads, and you can click the link to go to the Etsy listing:

If I had the cash, this would SO be mine… so.. someone buy something! LOL!  While it’s gray and dreary outside, I’ve been attempting to kick the designers into happy gear with bright beads, full of color, but.. they’re not going over so well.  *sigh*  I don’t want to make organics because the colors just don’t inspire me right now to create.  I want color, and lots of it, a rainbow spree of joy!  Hopefully this will catch on soon 😉

In the meantime, I started a pair of armwarmers with a Garnstudio pattern, and had to frog it because my circular knitting gauge was wayyy off from my flat knitting gauge, so it never would have fit.  But, the yarn (which I posted yesterday, I think) was BEAUTIFUL in the lace pattern, and I can’t wait to see it in mitered squares and finished knitted pieces 🙂  I’ll start that again tomorrow, after listing new eBay auctions and Etsy listings.

I finished reading Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts, and I’m scrambling to see if The Hollow is out yet. If it is, I’m splurging with the next payment that comes in! 🙂  It was COMPLETELY engaging, and the storyline rocks. Can’t wait to see this play out to the final end.

That’s all for tonight, I’m outta here!

Bunny! Whoopeeee! February 5, 2008

Last night, we went to the pet store to pick up guppies to feed:

and crickets to feed my son’s lizard (no lizard piccy, sorry!), and we ended up leaving with…

YAY! I’ve wanted a bunny for years. This little guy (yep, he’s got a dot, not a line..lol) is named Bunnicula, and he’s a dwarf rabbit. Anything other than dwarf, I don’t know. We set him up in a cage with lots of room to play in, and I’m doing research on what kinds of toys they like, and how to make them feel safe and comfortable. He’ll be well loved! Wille (my basset hound) sniffs him constantly when he’s out, and loves him to bits. He’s been asking for a kitten for a long time now, so I figured a bunny would slip by as a cat 😉

And… new beads are up. Still on eBay at the moment, trying to let bead browsers on the bay know that I’m moving shop to Etsy and my website. Here’s a peek!

Annnnnd…. I got yarn. The yummiest yarn I’ve ever bought so far! The seller is Yarntopia Treasures on eBay, or Yarntopia Treasures on Etsy. I had to get more of the Arctic Rose I just bought, for a mitered square lace up tank top. NOM!!1!!!11!! Here’s the Arctic Rose colorway (borrowing her photo 🙂 ). Succulent!

With the extra I ordered, I’ll have enough for some fingerless gloves, too!

New fees, yay. They’re upping the ante on the final value fee, from 5.25% (plus more if you sell an item over $25), to 8.75% plus 3.5% over $25. I’m going to slowly phase out my eBay postings and switch more to Etsy and my website. I’ll be posting here when I have new specials and new items on Etsy, so make sure to subscribe if you’re a bidder/buyer! 🙂

Wish me luck with the sales change… things are slow enough right now that this change will be difficult, but I hope my buyers and bidders will follow me to the new venues 🙂

The future of TorchByNight?

A new blog-it from Flaming Hot asks what I think my beads will look like in 5 years. This is a difficult one to pin down for almost any artist! If I were thrust into the future and got a gander at my beads, what I’d HOPE to see is…

Finer details.

Less structure, more freedom.

Colors that inspire the buyer to create.

Shapes that are comfortable to wear and work with.

Quality, originality and heirloom worthiness.

What I won’t mention here is style. I’ve gone through many different styles already, and I still am pretty erratic with the designs. I am focused on no one particular genre of bead, though I do find myself working with bright colors more often than organics. I actually would love to have one defining style, but my personality is such that I don’t think that will ever be possible! I’m eclectic, and personally I think I’m pretty hard to deal with in person, and I think it’s because of that that my art is all over the spectrum. I love the details, and I hope one day my stringer work gets more defined and finer, and I hope to be able to express what’s in my head better in glass.

Let’s see… glass from this week! (I’d post some old pictures of glass to show you some progress, but my external drive is in the glass room and I’m too cold to get up 😀

On another future note, I’m phasing down my eBay sales. Separate blog to follow 😀
